Structural shrines and monuments

Ruined /Partially Ruined Structural shrines (800 -1200 AD)

A ruined palace compound, 16 open shrines, 42 ruined square shaped shrines and 17 circular shaped shrines and an upsidal shaped shrine, most of them are in ruined and partially renovated shrines with historical remains (800 -1200 A.D) have been discovered by Sanalkumar. Documentation of the ruined and partially renovated medieval period structural shrines and the analysis of the square, circular and apsidal shrines have revealed the influence of migration from the Pallava, the Chalukya, the Pandya and the Chola Kingdoms to the Palakkad region. The worship deities included the gods, animals and the hero stones of medieval period were found both in the open air shrines and structural shrines. The largest concentration of the hero stones and Megalithic period menhirs revealed that the study area was a nodal centre of invasion due to its historical significances. The presence of the clustering of the ruined and partially renovated medieval Bhrahminical shrines of this area proves the identification of the earlier Bhrahminical settlement centre at Vencatam.
